New DCHM T-Shirt Design Revealed

Some of you may have seen me out and about wearing the new prototype for the next DCHeavyMetal.com t-shirt design featuring a parody of the classic Black Sabbath Vol. 4 album cover with Richard Nixon taking Ozzy’s place. From Sleep to Darkest Hour it seems like almost everyone has parodied this design so why not DCHM? I came up with the idea myself but I think we can all agree that RJ Mahoney did a great job executing the artwork and I think it’s another design that screams heavy metal and DC at the same time.

I’m ready to get these out to you guys so starting right now until Monday, Sept 16th we’re going to do a presale for these killer shirts. And you may have heard of this show I’m putting on at the Fillmore on Sept 26th, the DCHM 4th Anniversary Party (details here). If you buy a ticket to the show from DCHM and a shirt with it we’ll have a reduced price for you and the shirt will be available for pick up at the show.

All shirts will be black and the men’s shirts will be Gildan (a common band shirt brand). Women’s will be either Bella or District Threads. They’re all printed by MiNDJACKET Designs who printed my previous shirts. Now, here’s the pricing…

  • Men’s S-XL and women’s (girly cut) S-XL will be $15 each, shipped.
  • If you buy a ticket to the DCHM 4th Annivesary Party from us at the same time, the total will be $22. That’s $5 off! This option is only available for shirt pick up at the Fillmore the night of the show (the ticket will be mailed to you). If you’d like to purchase a shirt and multiple tickets, just add $12 per additional ticket.
  • Add an extra $1 for men’s XXL. Contact me if you need a size larger than that and we’ll work something out. This fee is for both the shipped option or the DCHM 4th Anniversary pick up option.
  • Add $1.50 per shirt if you are paying via Paypal using a credit/debit card (you do not have to pay the extra $1.50 if you paying with Paypal directly from a bank account). This fee is for both the shipped option or the DCHM 4th Anniversary pick up option.
  • If you’d like to purchase a ticket and not a shirt you can do that for $12 shipped (you must order the ticket from me by Sept 22nd to guarantee shipping on time).

To pay with Paypal go here and send money to:

DCHeavyMetal@Gmail.com

You don’t have to have a Paypal account to use it to pay. Be sure to include a note in the Message section with whatever address you want the item(s) shipped to and what size you want. If for some reason you don’t send the note properly, just email me from the same email address you made your payment from with the size and shipping info. If you don’t send me the right amount I’m just going to refund your purchase and you’ll have to try again.

I should have a few of the shirts in the new design at the show, but they will be more expensive than I’m selling them for here, will be sold for cash only and will be limited to the quantity at the show. I will also be at the Pinch on Thursday, Sept 12th with tickets for sale. The excellent Corsair is playing there that night and it’s a free show too so stop by if you can. Details are listed here.

I hope you all like this design as much as I do. I’m trying hard to keep costs as low as possible. If you have any questions about any of this feel free to send me an email at DCHeavyMetal@Gmail.com

Four Year Anniversary

This September DCHeavyMetal.com turns 4 years old and I’m really trying to make it special with all kinds of great things, online and offline, to celebrate. There’s going to be more posts on the site this month, including a few album reviews which are in the works as well as a good old fashioned concert review or two, something I haven’t posted too recently. I’m also working on an app for Android users which will let people pull up the concert calendar on their phones very easily as well as some other features like an interactive map that will use your GPS location data to tell you what concert venues, record stores and other businesses in the area that are metal friendly are near you. This should make traveling to these places much easier if you’ve never been there before. I should also be selling not one but TWO new t-shirt designs this month that I hope you all like as much as I do. I can’t wait to reveal them! Now some details about some of the other things DCHM will be doing to celebrate our 4th anniversary…

To get things started, right now we’re giving away a pair of tickets (before they even go on sale) to see Slayer, Gojira and 4Arm at the Fillmore Silver Spring on 11/19. To enter you just need to send me the title of your favorite Slayer song either on Twitter (send it to @MetalChris) or you can leave a comment on the Facebook post here. The winner will be chosen at 5pm EST on Thursday, Sept 5th so don’t wait!

Metal Night IV at Port City Brewery

This Sunday, September 8th, you’ll find me at Port City Brewery in Alexandria as I co-host Metal Night IV there with their metal head brewer Will! The event is free and there won’t be any bands playing but we’ll be playing metal on the speakers all night from a playlist that you guys send in songs for. You can send song requests (limit 2 per person) to Will via Twitter (@PCBCBrewMetal) or via email at Will@PortCityBrewing.com. Since the brewery is releasing their Oktoberfest beer this metal night is having an Oktoberfest theme, meaning think of your favorite metal songs with a German theme or by bands actually from Germany (Blind Guardian, Kreator, Necrophagist, Sodom, etc…) You can send in non-German songs too, and local bands are always welcome on the list. There will be nine beers on tap for Metal Night IV including rare releases such as Deracho, Maniacal (named after the Cannibal Corpse song with that title) and my personal favorite, the smoked porter named Two. In addition to all that, we’ll have lots of prizes to give away, including tickets to upcoming area metal shows like Pelican/Coliseum at DC9, another pair of tickets to Slayer, and tix to several shows coming to Empire. More details and info can be found on the Facebook event page here.

DCHeavyMetal.com 4th Anniversary Party

And you may have heard by now that there will be a big DCHeavyMetal.com anniversary show at the Fillmore Silver Spring on Thursday, September 26th! I’ve got some of my favorite local bands, as well as the excellent sci-fi themed thrashers Vektor, playing this show! And these aren’t just any locals on the bill: the beer soaked heavy riffs of Borracho will be sure to please any Sabbath fans (isn’t that all of us?) and the guitar wizardy of Midnight Eye is going to sound great at the Fillmore! The opening act is Asthma Castle, a stoner metal band from Baltimore featuring Adam Jarvis (of Misery Index and Pig Destroyer) on drums. There will be more surprises to be announced about this show as well, so join the Facebook event page (here) and I’ll keep you up to date! I hope a lot of you can come out to this one, if there’s a good turn out I might be able to do more of these, plus it will be cool seeing these bands on such a big stage! You can get tickets for $12 here.

Last but not least a big thank you goes out to everyone who helps make this site, and the area’s metal scene, what it is. Checking out local bands, suggesting new tunes to people, going to concerts big and small all around the area, forming bands, setting up shows and just spreading the metal word any way you know how, it’s all of you who make this area’s metal scene awesome. I wouldn’t be doing this still after 4 years, advertisement free mind you, if this area’s metal scene sucked. I may keep this website alive but it’s all of you metal heads in this area that keep the scene alive here in the DMV and give me something to keep writing about. I hope to have many more reviews, improvements, fun events and of course ticket give aways for many more years to come. Keep it heavy everyone and remember: support the scene you’re a part of!

Free Borracho show at the Pinch

Borracho at the Pinch

This Saturday, the 18th of May 2013, DC’s own stoner metal riff masters Borracho will be headlining a free concert at the Pinch in Columbia Heights! And this isn’t just any show, it’s also a beer release show! The awesome folks over at Port City Brewery, based in Alexandria, Virginia, have worked with the guys in Borracho to make the band their own signature beer! The Borracho Smokin’ Brown Ale is, as the name suggests, a smoked brown ale. The ale was made with an alcohol percentage of 6.66%, which is fitting for a metal band whose name translates from Spanish to mean a drunk or lush. The supply of this beer is extremely limited and won’t be sold in any stores. In fact it may be gone by the end of the night, so be sure to get out to this show if you want to try it. In addition to the beer being on draft at the show, there will also be lots of free prizes given out to people who attend. I’ll have a pair of tickets to see Kylesa at the Rock & Roll Hotel on June 19th up for grabs and there will be other prizes as well including merch from Borracho and Port City and also a growler (a 60 oz jug) full of the Borracho Smokin’ Brown Ale that one winner will get to take home! The growler is being provided by D’vines, an excellent beer/liquor/wine store also in Columbia Heights that even fills beer growlers on site.

So here’s some details about the show. Doors open at 8pm and it’s all ages. Obviously you’ve gotta be 21 with an ID to drink. The venue is called The Pinch (address and map here) and it’s in Columbia Heights, which is a pretty nice neighborhood in Washington DC. There’s street parking but unlike some of the hotter areas in DC, like U St and H St, the parking is pretty ample even on a Saturday night and since it’s a good area you don’t have to worry about your car. The Pinch is also metro accessible, you can take the yellow or green line to the Columbia Heights stop and the venue is about half a mile north on 14th Street from the station’s exit (see it on a map here). The Pinch has a pretty normal bar/restaurant upstairs but the show will be taking place in the downstairs level since that’s where the stage is. The stairs down are right by the front door, you can’t miss them. There’s also another bar downstairs so you won’t have to keep going back and forth all night.

There are going to be four stoner metal bands playing this free show and, in addition to Borracho headlining, there will be sets by Cortez from Boston, Wasted Theory from Delaware and the new project of Dave Sherman (of Earthride and Spirit Caravan fame) named Weed Is Weed from Maryland. You can check out any of those bands by clicking their names of course, and be sure to watch the awesome Borracho videos that I’ve embedded below. You can also get more info on the Facebook event page for this show here.

Metal Night III at Port City Brewery

Metal Night III at Port City Brewery

This Sunday, April 7th, 2013, I’ll be co-hosting the third metal night at Port City Brewery in Alexandria from 5 to 9pm! I’ve got over 15 tickets to give away at Metal Night III to see upcoming shows by Anthrax, Death, Suffocation, Ghost and Mayhem Fest! And while there won’t be any bands playing live there will be metal played throughout the brewery all during the event. In fact, you can send in your own song requests ahead of time to get them added to the set list by emailing Port City brewer and metal head Will at Will@PortCityBrewing.com Requests can be any sub-genre of metal, even the extreme ones are ok. If you’ve got a classic metal favorite, some weird underground metal band’s song you never thought you’d hear in public or just want to promote your own local metal band, then send in your request to hear it at Metal Night!

And did I mention the beer? Port City makes some damn fine beer and in their tasting room. They sell it by the glass (or growler if you want to take it home) for cheaper than most bars sell their crappy mass produced beer for (more on that here in my previous post about beer and metal). You can even get a “flight” of smaller glasses to sample several of the beers to help you figure out what you like. Since the event ends at 9pm you can still get home before it gets too late, we gotta work Mondays too. There isn’t a kitchen at Port City Brewery but there will be a food truck on site. Also, the local power metal band A Sound Of Thunder will be there to raise money for the local fests Flight Of The Valkyries and Metal Quest so keep an eye out for them as well.

Admission is free to Metal Night and I encourage you to share this post or the Facebook event page (here) with your metal head friends. You don’t have to be 21 to attend but you must be 21 to drink. Designated drivers of all legal driving ages are welcome! If you’ve never been to Port City Brewing Company before, the address is 3950 Wheeler Ave, Alexandria, VA 22304 (map).

It will be a great night of sampling some excellent craft beer while listening to some killer metal tunes with friends new and old. Now think up which songs you want to hear at Metal Night III and get ready to win some prizes!

A Black Shirt For Black Friday

Well it is Black Friday and starting today, November 23rd 2012 through Sunday December 2nd I’m going to be doing a presale for DCHeavyMetal.com t-shirts. I’ve had a lot of people ask me about them lately so I’m going to print up another batch. The artwork will be the black and white version of Abe Lincoln in the King Diamond style corpse paint printed on the front a black Gildan tshirt. The artwork, shown below, was drawn by Joshy Brettell (drummer of the local metal band Ilsa) and you can see some more of his awesome artwork here. The shirts are being printed by MiNDJACKET Designs, check them out here and here if you need some shirts made or just like funny shirts. They will be selling various other shirts at the Spellbound Freak Bazaar on Sat the 24th from 5pm to 9pm. Details on that event are posted here.

Now here’s how this is going to work. Instead of guessing how many shirts I need of each size I’m going to let you all tell me by preordering. I am doing this now so that I can have them shipped to everyone before Christmas, because nothing says holiday spirit like a local metal site’s parody shirt of the guy who sings No Presents For Christmas. Just be sure to get your order in to me by December 2nd. The sizes will be US men’s sizes S, M, L, XL and XXL. I might be able to do bigger but you’ll need to contact me before you order if you need that. I’m also going to have girlie shirts available, and they’ll be the same price. The girlie shirts will be sizes S, M, L and XL. So here’s the prices:

$15 per shirt including shipping to anywhere in the US
Add $1.50 per shirt if you are paying via Paypal using a credit/debit card (you do not have to pay the extra $1.50 if you paying with Paypal directly from a bank account).
Add $1 if you need size XXL. If you need a size larger than XXL please email me at DCHeavyMetal@Gmail.com before you order so I can figure out what the price will be and if I can even do it in time for Xmas.

To pay with Paypal go here and send money to:

DCHeavyMetal@Gmail.com

Be sure to include a note in the Message section with whatever address you want the item shipped to and what size you want. If for some reason you don’t send the note properly, just email me from the same email address you made your payment from with the size and shipping info. If you don’t send me the right amount I’m just going to refund your purchase and you’ll have to try again.

I am trying to make this as cheap as possible for everyone. If you don’t want to use Paypal you can just give me cash at an upcoming metal show. During the time this promotion is running you’ll be able to find me at High On Fire at the Rock & Roll Hotel Nov 23rd (details here) and Biipiigwan at Casa Fiesta on Nov 30th (details here) and Cannibal Corpse at the Rock & Roll Hotel Dec 1st (details here). I’ll be the dude with the DSLR, beard and wearing one of these shirts as well so come up and talk to me. If for some reason you need international shipping I am not guaranteeing that for Xmas delivery, and you’ll need to email me at DCHeavyMetal@Gmail.com so we can figure out what shipping to your country will cost. If you are someone who knows me personally already and I see you at shows a lot, email me first and I can drop the shipping charges if you want to just meet me at a metal show or something. Also, I DO NOT want to trade shirts for one from your band or whatever else. I’m not doing this for profit and trading shirts basically turns this into a loss for me. If you want one buy one, I’m not interested in trading. I’m not planning on printing any extra shirts, just what you people order through December 2nd. If you want one now is the time to get one. If you have any other questions, just email me or ask me in person at one of the above mentioned shows.

Heavy Metal Night II at Port City Brewery

This Friday, the 16th of November, the Port City Brewery in Alexandria, Virginia, is having their second ever metal night and I’m inviting you to get your ass down there and have some beers with me. Port City’s assistant brewer, Will, is a big metal head and brews much of the beer they make while blasting metal on the stereo so he figured why not have a bunch of metal heads over to listen to metal and drink that same beer. There won’t be any bands playing live but there will be a mix of all kinds of metal playing the entire night. In fact, you can send Will songs to add to the playlist right now via Twitter at @PCBCBrewMetal OR via email at will@portcitybrewing.com. So if you know some obscure black metal song that you’ve always wished you could hear in public or if you just want to give your band a little more exposure, this is a great way to do it. The event starts at 8pm and will run until 1:30am. If you’ve never been to Port City Brewing Company before, the address is 3950 Wheeler Ave, Alexandria, VA 22304 (map).

To make this event even better, I’ll be there all night holding a raffle that anyone who shows up can enter (no purchase necessary, in fact, designated drivers get two entries!) and I’ll be giving prizes out throughout the night. What prizes you ask? Well, for starters I’ll be giving out tickets to several upcoming metal shows, including High On Fire at the Rock & Roll Hotel on Nov 23rd as well as Clutch at the 9:30 Club on December 26th. Oh, and some of you might have heard that Lamb Of God, In Flames and Hatebreed are playing the Fillmore in Silver Spring the night after this metal night. I’ll be giving away a pair of tickets to that show as well, but to sweeten the deal the winner of the tickets will also get a special meet and greet with the band backstage the night of the show! That’s right, you can’t buy a meet & greet VIP ticket for this show but you can win one from DCHM at Port City this Friday on metal night! In addition there will be other prizes given out, like one of the brand new King Giant zip up hoodies (seen right) and some sweet Port City merch as well. You guys know I love giving free stuff to metal heads!

But wait, there’s more! This Friday night will also be this year’s debut of the Port City Brewery seasonal holiday beer, Tidings. It’s brewed with honey and spices and has a 7.8% alcohol content so it has some bite. You’ll be one of the first to get to try this year’s batch and of course you can also drink any of the other Port City beers which will be on tap all night. It should be noted that the Port City brewery is not like the Dogfish Head or Capital City breweries, it isn’t a restaurant and does not serve food. However there will be a food truck there, Borinquen Lunch Box, serving Puerto Rican food til 10pm or so. While you’re there you can also take a tour of the brewery to learn exactly how this local operation works.

In summary, it should be a really awesome night! You get to hang out with lots of the area’s metal heads, drink some great locally brewed beer (priced cheaper than most bars sell crap beer for!), enter to win some awesome prizes ALL while listening to a killer metal playlist that you can even add songs to! There’s no cover and of course you’ve got to be over 21 to drink. You must be on premises to win the prizes (so if you leave and they call your number, someone else gets it), and the final drawing will be held around midnight or so. Please tell your friends about this (there’s a Facebook Event Page here that anyone can join and invite others) because a good turn out will mean more metal nights in the future. Will is working hard to make a place for metal heads to hang out, talk about metal and network on nights when there isn’t a big show in town but it can’t be done without you showing up and supporting. I hope to see a lot of you there!

Three Year Anniversary

Today DCHeavyMetal.com turns 3 and it wouldn’t ever have been possible if it wasn’t for all the metal heads in this area. I am rather proud of myself as there are so many blogs out there that start and stop before running this long. I never thought when I started DCHM that it would end up changing my life but it certainly has. I’ve met so many cool people because of this site and it is you all who make this site worth doing. You read this site, tell your friends about it, shake my hand and say thanks at shows, and even tell me when I screw things up on the site, be it minor grammatical errors or bad/old info on the concert listings. It all helps make DCHeavyMetal.com something better than I could have ever hoped. But that doesn’t mean I’m not going to continue to improve the site and spend most of my free time making it kick even more ass. Right now I’m in the middle of the slow process of completely revamping the Venues page. When it is done all the info on it will be updated and it will look more like the Upcoming Concert Calendar‘s new look. It will also include info on other local metal related businesses like record stores that specialize in metal and local guitar repair shops with employees that are metal heads. I’m also working on a deal with the Howard Theatre to give away tickets to their upcoming metal shows so hopefully one of you will be winning tickets to see Morbid Angel soon.

There’s another change coming to DCHM, and I think it’s a big step for the site. I’ve been thinking for a while about posting some album reviews on the site, however, I personally don’t like writing album reviews. So I’ve decided to let someone else start writing some for DCHM. I’ll have a formal announcement about that later but expect to see, at least at first, only material by local bands being reviewed here. I think Pig Destroyer’s new album will be the first review but again, some of the details are still being ironed out. The site keeps me very busy as it is with the constant updating of the calendar and you may have noticed some long gaps between posts on the site this summer. Those were mostly due to my free time simply being overwhelmed with the work I need to do on the site just to keep it up to date. Hopefully letting someone else post some album reviews will help break up those gaps between my posts. It’s kind of scary to me to give up some of the writing control as up to this point everything on DCHM (photos, videos, writing, reviews, concert listings, etc..) has been written or shot by me. But I’d like to see the site get even bigger and it is getting to the point that I simply can’t do it alone. Please don’t ask me if you can start contributing to DCHM, if I want you to do so I will ask you. I’m working on setting up a mailing address that local bands can send material to for review but nothing is final yet so you’ll have to wait for that info to be posted when it is solidified.

I’m looking forward to seeing DCHeavyMetal.com evolve into something even better than what it is now but it still takes help from you guys. If you’d like to kick a few bucks my way you can always do so via Paypal by sending any amount money to DCHeavyMetal@Gmail.com (or just clicking here). I promise to only spend the money on things related to the site, and maybe beer. But most of it will definitely go to things like hosting, concert tickets, upgrades to my cameras for concert photos, and restocking merch. Even if ya can’t help out financially helping spread the word to your metal head friends always helps too. Thanks to everyone for making the past three years the most metal three years of my life! Keep it heavy and remember, support the scene you’re a part of!
