One of 2013’s hit albums in the world of metal was Sunbather by Deafheaven. In 2012 Pallbearer‘s debut album Sorrow & Extinction was a hit as well. On Tuesday, June 10th these two bands will both be playing at the Rock & Roll Hotel! We’re so excited at DCHM that we’re giving away a free pair of tickets to this very show to one of you lucky readers. To enter leave a comment on this post mentioning one of your favorite metal albums of 2014. At 5pm EST this Friday, June 6th, a winner will be chosen at random (using Random.org) from all valid entries to receive two tickets to the show! Be sure to use a valid email you check regularly so I can contact you if you win. Don’t worry, I won’t add you to any spam lists or sell your info or anything sleazy like that. If I haven’t heard back from the winner within 24 hours another winner will be chosen at random. If you can’t wait to see if you win, or the contest is already over when you read this, then you can get tickets from Ticket Fly right now for $15 here.
San Francisco’s Deafheaven took the frostbitten grimness normally associated with black metal and turned it completely around with their album Sunbather by conjuring images of summer heatwaves, blinding sunlight and burnt skin. Their atmospheric black metal is almost hypnotic and they manage to take the listener on quite the journey in each song. Pallbearer is a doom metal band from Arkansas that has managed to find a perfect balance between ultra heavy riffs and catchy songwriting. Their clean singing vocal style adds a layer of depth to their slow, down tuned songs and since they have a new album due out soon we may be lucky enough to hear some of their new material at this show too. Also on this bill will be the opener Wreck And Reference, a California based drone/ambient band. Be sure to check out a song by each band on the bill below and let me know what your favorite albums in 2014 so far are.
Deafheaven – Dream House
Pallbearer – Devoid Of Redemption
Wreck And Reference – Absurdities And Echoes

Got to go with The Satanist by Behemoth as the best album of 2014 so far. Still looking forward to the new Suicide Silence release in a few weeks.
Lots of good music coming out these days, but I’ll go with Agalloch “The Serpent and the Sphere.”
I’d love to go to this show. So far, the new Godflesh EP has already been kicking my ass, so I’ll pick that.
Autopsy – Tourniquets, Hacksaws and Graves! Thanks.
My favorite metal album of 2014 so far is Lacuna Coil, Broken Crown Halo. I know a lot of people dont feel it, but I still like them :P also seeing Deafheaven live will save my life please <3
Gotta go with Funereal Presence’s ‘The Archer Takes Aim’. I’m a Negative Plane fanboy and this album really hits the spot. Black metal really doesn’t get any better than this in 2014.
Favorite metal album, Tales of Ruin by Cavern!
My favorite album this year has to be Woods of Desolation – As the Stars
Thou’s Heathen is probably leading right now but there’s an impending new Trap Them album so we’ll see.
The Earthmass self-titled is probably my favorite album of the year so far
The new Crowbar has been kicking my ass especially the tune…”Symbolic Suicide” with that fast heavy Carnivore/Peter Steele sound!!!
It’s an even split between “Heathen” by Thou and Thantifaxath’s “The Bright White Nothing At The End Of The Tunnel”
Sacred White Noise by Thantifaxath on Dark Descent Records. One of the most unique black metal albums I’ve ever heard and a great new influence. Deafheaven is one of my favorites and they killed it when they played with Alcest back when.
My predictable answer is Casualties of Cool.
Crystalline by Hark
I really like The Joy of Motion by Animals as Leaders.
I’m torn between Behemoth’s The Satanist (album I’ve been found most interesting) and Agalloch’s The Serpent and the Sphere (album I play the most in my car). I’d probably have to go with The Satanist though. I know that other people have put saxophones over blast beats before, but it was cool to see such an established band doing something like that.
It’s not totally metal, but the new Swans album has been kicking my ass.
the satanist.
Melana Chasmata by Trypticon.
Death Mask by Lord Mantis
