Boris is a strange three piece band from Japan named after a Melvins song. They’re known for releasing albums of various genres, sometimes metal, sometimes not, but always very experimental. They’re playing at the 9:30 Club on Saturday, August 2nd, and we’re giving away a pair of tickets to this show to one of you lucky DCHM readers! To enter leave a comment on this post telling me what the best show you’ve ever seen at the 9:30 Club is! Hopefully it’s a metal show but it doesn’t have to be to count. At 5pm EST this Friday, June 27th, a winner will be chosen at random (using Random.org) from all valid entries to receive two tickets to the show! Be sure to use a valid email you check regularly so I can contact you if you win. Don’t worry, I won’t add you to any spam lists or sell your info or anything sleazy like that. If I haven’t heard back from the winner within 24 hours another winner will be chosen at random. If you can’t wait to see if you win, or the contest is already over when you read this, then you can get tickets from Ticket Fly right now for $18 here.
Boris isn’t a band that fits into any one music genre as they are constantly shifting and experimenting with their sound. They’ve worked with artists like Sunn O))) and Merzbow and are in a constant state of evolution. Their live shows are like no other since their music is like no other band’s. There’s some other great bands on this bill too though, including The Atlas Moth as direct support. They play an atmospheric style of sludge metal that is really catchy and hypnotic at the same time. The opening band is SubRosa, a doom/stoner band from Salt Lake City that has been getting a lot of buzz lately, and rightly so. The band’s moody sound is infectious. Now check out the below tunes by the bands playing and let me hear about your favorite show ever at the 9:30 Club!
Boris – Statement
The Atlas Moth – Holes In The Desert
SubRosa – Cosey Mo

Oh man, I almost never go to the 9:30 club for shows. I think the best show I have seen there was Dengue Fever – the singer is just unreal. So very not metal, I know.
I’ve seen Boris a bunch though and they’re always sick. Loved them for years, even a bit of the poppier stuff.
Thanks!
I haven’t been back to the 9:30 club since I lived here for 6 months in 1997. But I saw a few good ones then. I’ll go with Faith No More as my favorite. But Jesus Lizard is a close second.
I think I’ve only ever seen Thievery Corporation at the 9:30 Club. I would like to have a more legit answer but, alas, that’s all I got.
Out of everything I’ve seen there? Probably the first time I saw the Scissor Sisters. They put on an amazingly fun show.
Kraftwerk was awesome! I’m so glad I got to see them once.
I’ve only been to the 9:30 Club a few times, but the Goblin show in December was cool. Got to hear the Suspira theme song live.
Mastodon playing Crack the Skye!
Honestly seeing Andrew WK on the 10th anniversary tour for I Get Wet was the most fun I’ve ever had there, despite all the great metal shows I’ve seen there.
Citizen Cope–he was fantastic.
Best show I’ve ever seen at 930 has got to be when saw Slayer a couple years back. The guy, who I only know as ‘the slayer dude’, who yells “fucking slayer!” regardless of what band is playing and always comes prepared with a Kevlar vest and knee pads, asked me why I wasn’t wearing any ear plugs. I told him that it was because I had never seen slayer and needed to experience the show at full volume( it was definitely one of the loudest shows I’ve been to). Then he asks me “kid, don’t you want to hear your children cry?”, and takes his plugs out of his ears and tries to put them in mine. I sort of shove his hand away and he just laughs and goes to the bar to buy me a beer.
Slayer is also just so rad live; they totally blew me away.
It would either have to be Buckethead or Tomahawk. Both were bizarre and incredibly awesome.
Truth be told, it would have to be Atari Teenage Riot. It was my first time at 930 and i have to say i was glad i was sitting upstairs. Christ, all you heard was noise and feedback as a couple of the members just stood there staring into the audience. Then out of nowhere Alec Empire runs at full speed and jumps off the stage like a missile into the first row. It was nuts. I have seen a few bands there over the years and that is the moment that really stuck out to me.
In my time living in NoVA, I still have yet to go to the 9:30 Club. However, I have seen Boris before–excellent show!
I’ve only been to the 9:30 club once, and that was to see Mastodon, so I guess I’ll go with that! I’d really like to see Boris though.
By far, the best concert I’ve seen at 9:30 is (the) Melvins last August. It was incredible.
Mastodon for sure. One of my favorite bands and they didn’t disappoint.
