The legendary Swedish prog metal band Opeth is touring with Texas based doom metal masters The Sword which comes to the Fillmore Silver Spring on Friday, September 30th, 2016! We’re so psyched to see these two great bands together that we’re giving away a pair of tickets to this very show to one of you lucky DCHM readers! These bands are from two very different subgenres of heavy metal so to enter: just leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite heavy metal subgenre is. From traditional to funeral doom metal to crabcore to brutal slam sci-fi tech death metal, any metal subgenre is valid as long as it is your favorite! Opeth have been one of the leading bands in the progressive metal world since they released their debut album, Orchid, back in 1995. The band’s 12th studio album, Sorceress, is being released on the very same day as this show. That means we’ll be some of the first to hear these new songs live, as well as some of the band’s older classics from throughout the years as well. But let’s not forget the opening act on this tour, The Sword. Normally a headliner in their own right, The Sword will be opening shows on this tour with their catchy brand of doom metal. It’s not every day you get to see two great bands from such different subgenres on the same bill so this is not a show to be missed. Bongzilla is a Madison, Wisconsin based stoner metal band that has been pretty quiet for the past 10 years. They’ve been added to next year’s Maryland Deathfest bill but you don’t have to wait until May to see Bongzilla play live! If you’re into stoner metal then you don’t want to miss the return of Bongzilla to our area this weekend! In addition, there’s some great stoner/doom local bands on the bill as well including Baltimore’s own Corpse Light, Slagstorm from Hagerstown (featuring members of Fortress) and Northern Virginia based Foehammer, who you may remember played the DCHM holiday party last year. Goatsnake is from Los Angeles and features members of bands like The Obsessed and Sunn O))). Goatsnake have made a name for themselves with their blend of southern rock and doom metal and this summer they released their first album in 15 years, Black Age Blues, and it rips! They have a high energy live show but they rarely make it to the East Coast to play live so you don’t want to miss this rare chance to see them right here in Washington, DC, one of just three of their East Coast dates. Also on the bill is YDi (pronounced Why Die), a reformed old school hardcore band that started in Philadelphia in the 80s. The opener is Big ‡ Brave from Montreal, Canada, and they play a strange experimental style of metal. The anonymous Swedes of Ghost have their true identities shrouded in mystery but one thing is for sure, they know how to put on a killer live show. From their costumes, stage backdrops and lighting to their super catchy riffs and chorus lines Ghost is quite the musical spectacle to behold. They’ll also be playing with Purson, a psychedelic band from London, who should be great at setting the stage for Ghost. Power Trip is a Dallas, Texas based crossover thrash band known for their high energy shows! Their 2013 album Manifest Decimation was a hit with fans and critics and now they’ll be headlining the Rock & Roll Hotel for what is sure to be a sweaty night of moshing and headbanging! Foreseen is a thrash band from Finland that came out of nowhere when they released their debut album, Helsinki Savagery late in 2014, one of the year’s best metal releases. Those two bands playing this show should be enough to get you out for this but there will also be sets by local crossover thrash band Red Death and local harDCore band Protestor.
