If you can’t wait to see if you win or the contest is already over when you read this, then you can get tickets from Ticket Fly for just $25 here.

Graveyard plays a very catchy blues influenced style of hard rock than any fan of the heavy can enjoy. If you haven’t checked out their modern classic album Hisingen Blues I highly suggest it as a great starting point for getting into the band. Their latest album, Innocence & Decadence is pretty damn good too. And while Graveyard has played in Washington DC before, never have they played in the District on a stage with the size and sound set up like the 9:30 Club’s. The opening act is Spiders, a rock band also from Gothenburg, Sweden, that was formed as a side project of Graveyard drummer Axel Sjöberg though they have now come into their own. Now check out these great videos by the bands below and let me know what was your favorite show ever at the 9:30 Club!

Graveyard – Hisingen Blues

Graveyard – The Apple And The Tree

Spiders – Mad Dog

Review of Clutch at the 9:30 Club

Well all our year end posts have put me a bit behind on things but better late than never I suppose. On Sunday, December 27th I was at the 9:30 Club to see Clutch play along with Crobot and Valkyrie. There was a film crew there so it is very likely that this show, or at least parts of it, could wind up on a future Clutch video.

I got there early to make sure I could catch Valkyrie. The band is from Harrisonburg, Virginia, and is probably best known for sharing a guitarist with the band Baroness, Pete Adams. However it is Pete’s brother Jake Adams that is the driving force behind Valkyrie. The band’s sound is steeped in the hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains with Jake’s vocals often pausing for several extended dueling guitar solos between the Adams brothers. Riffs abound and the chemistry between the brothers is as apparent as the fun they were having while performing on the 9:30 Club’s big stage. These guys have been something of a regional secret and it’s about time the word gets out about them. Hopefully this winter mini tour with Clutch will lead to bigger and better things for them.

The next band to play was Crobot from Pottsville, Pennsylvania. They’re a relatively new band, having formed in 2011, though they obviously see themselves as some sort of 70s throwback band. I’m generally ok with throwback bands but I’ve got to admit these guys just didn’t do it for me. I found their songs overly simple and the vocalist, Brandon Yeagley, was running around on stage striking poses like a coked up Steven Tyler. His voice was reminiscent of Geddy Lee, which is probably a good thing to some and bad thing to others, but honestly his stage presence was so annoying I quickly lost interest in not just him but the entire band.

Finally it was time for local favorites Clutch! This was the first time the Germantown, Maryland, based band would play to a local audience since the release of their latest album, Psychic Warfare, back in October. The album was well received and Clutch played the entire album throughout the course of the night, though not in order. A giant sized banner with the new album’s cover artwork hung behind Clutch while they performed their new songs with some older tunes thrown in throughout as well, and what a performance it was! The band hit the stage hot and seemed to fly through their set list without a whole lot of talking between songs. Clutch has really perfected their sound and live performance over the years and shows like this one make it obvious that they aren’t slowing down any time soon. Many bands at this stage of their careers start to lose a step or three but Clutch seems to only be getting better. It’s a rare quality that makes their energetic live shows special every time they play to their home crowd here in DC.

Below are my shots of the bands that night, you can click on any of them to see them full sized.

Corrosion Of Conformity ticket give away

CoC at 9:30 Club

December 7th is known as a day that will live in infamy so it is fitting that on Monday, December 7th, 2015, Corrosion Of Conformity will be playing the 9:30 Club! We couldn’t be more excited about the long awaited return of Pepper Keenan to the band so we’re going to give away a pair of tickets to the show to one of you lucky DCHM readers! To enter just leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite metal concert or fest of 2015 has been. If you haven’t been to any metal concerts this year then tell me which one you’re most looking forward to. At 5pm EST this Friday, December 4th, a winner will be chosen at random (using Random.org) from all valid entries to win the tickets. Be sure to use a valid email you check regularly so I can contact you if you win. Don’t worry, I won’t add you to any spam lists or sell your info or anything sleazy like that. If I haven’t heard back from the winner in 24 hours another winner will be chosen at random. If you can’t wait to see if you win or the contest is already over when you read this, then you can get tickets from Ticket Fly for just $20 here.

Pepper Keenan has been busy with his other band, Down, for years but now he’s back in Corrosion Of Conformity to play guitar once again for the North Carolina based sludge metal band. Also on this show’s bill will be Brant Bjork and the Low Desert Punk Band. Brant Bjork has been in a ton of bands but he is probably best remembered for being the drummer and a founding member of Kyuss and for his time in in Fu Manchu. There will also be a set by Oakland based thrashy stoner band Saviours. The opening act is Mothership, who aren’t a funk band but are actually a stoner band from Dallas. That’s a hell of a line up for just $20! Now check out these videos of the bands playing and let me know what your favorite metal concert of 2015 has been!

Corrosion Of Conformity – Vote With A Bullet

Brant Bjork and the Low Desert Punk Band – Boogie Woogie On Your Brain

Saviours – Cavern Of Mind

Mothership – City Nights

Boris ticket give away

Boris at the 9:30 Club

Boris is a strange three piece band from Japan named after a Melvins song. They’re known for releasing albums of various genres, sometimes metal, sometimes not, but always very experimental. They’re playing at the 9:30 Club on Saturday, August 2nd, and we’re giving away a pair of tickets to this show to one of you lucky DCHM readers! To enter leave a comment on this post telling me what the best show you’ve ever seen at the 9:30 Club is! Hopefully it’s a metal show but it doesn’t have to be to count. At 5pm EST this Friday, June 27th, a winner will be chosen at random (using Random.org) from all valid entries to receive two tickets to the show! Be sure to use a valid email you check regularly so I can contact you if you win. Don’t worry, I won’t add you to any spam lists or sell your info or anything sleazy like that. If I haven’t heard back from the winner within 24 hours another winner will be chosen at random. If you can’t wait to see if you win, or the contest is already over when you read this, then you can get tickets from Ticket Fly right now for $18 here.

Boris isn’t a band that fits into any one music genre as they are constantly shifting and experimenting with their sound. They’ve worked with artists like Sunn O))) and Merzbow and are in a constant state of evolution. Their live shows are like no other since their music is like no other band’s. There’s some other great bands on this bill too though, including The Atlas Moth as direct support. They play an atmospheric style of sludge metal that is really catchy and hypnotic at the same time. The opening band is SubRosa, a doom/stoner band from Salt Lake City that has been getting a lot of buzz lately, and rightly so. The band’s moody sound is infectious. Now check out the below tunes by the bands playing and let me hear about your favorite show ever at the 9:30 Club!

Boris – Statement

The Atlas Moth – Holes In The Desert

SubRosa – Cosey Mo

Animals As Leaders ticket give away

Animals As Leaders at the 9:30 Club

Instrumental progressive band Animals As Leaders are headlining the 9:30 Club on Saturday, May 17th. This is a show will be an instrumental music fan’s dream come true as none of the three bands playing have a vocalist. I love instrumental bands and to help get you into them too we’re going to give away a free pair of tickets to this show. To enter: leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite instrumental song is. From Metallica’s Orion to Watain’s Lawless Darkness to Animals As Leaders’ own CAFO, any instrumental song will count as long as you love it! At 5pm EST this Friday, May 2nd, a winner will be chosen at random (using Random.org) from all valid entries to receive two tickets to the show! Be sure to use a valid email you check regularly so I can contact you if you win. Don’t worry, I won’t add you to any spam lists or sell your info or anything sleazy like that. If I haven’t heard back from the winner in 24 hours another winner will be chosen at random. If you can’t wait to see if you win, or the contest is already over when you read this, then you can get tickets from right now for $20 from Ticket Fly here.

Animals As Leaders members Tosin Abasi and Javier Reyes were both from the DC area originally before relocating to California to form Animals As Leaders. Their incredible musicianship and technical prowess has earned them fans all over the world though you can bet this show will feel something like a home town show of sorts. Also playing is Conquering Dystopia, an instrumental band featuring guitar wiz Keith Merrow and Jeff Loomis (ex-Nevermore) on guitars, Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse on bass and Alex Rüdinger, drummer for The Faceless. This band has quite the pedigree but their self titled debut album shows that they not only live up to expectations, but exceed them with a level of technicality and aggression few can match. The opening act is Chon, a progressive instrumental band from San Diego. All three of these bands can really play and this show is on a Saturday night so you don’t have the school-night excuse for missing this one. Now check out these killer tunes by the bands playing and tell me what your favorite instrumental song is!

Goblin ticket give away

Goblin at the 9:30 Club

OK so Goblin isn’t exactly a metal band, but since the Italian progressive group has been recording horror movie soundtracks since the 70s I figured there’s a good amount of cross over here and some of you metal heads might want to check these guys out when they play the 9:30 Club on Friday, December 13th. Please note that this is an early show (the venue has another unrelated concert starting at 10pm the same night) and doors will open at 6pm and I’d expect it to be over at about 9pm. We’re pretty excited about this rare chance to see Goblin live so DCHeavyMetal.com is giving away a pair of tickets this show to one of you lucky readers. To enter leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite horror movie is. This Friday, December 6th at 5pm EST a winner will be chosen at random (using Random.org) from all valid entries to win the tickets. Be sure to use a valid email you check regularly so I can contact you if you win. Don’t worry, I won’t add you to any spam lists or sell your info or anything sleazy like that. If I haven’t heard back from the winner in 24 hours another winner will be chosen at random. If you can’t wait to see if you win or the contest is already over when you read this, then you can get tickets from Ticket Fly right now for $25 here.

Goblin is famous for composing music for underground horror classics like Suspiria, George Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead, Deep Red, Profondo Rosso and many more! If you’re not familiar with the band I highly recommend you check out this beginner’s guide to Goblin here, and of course check out a few of the songs I’ve got streaming at the end of this post. In 40 years the band has never come to North America, until now, and who knows if they’ll ever tour here again so fans of horror movie soundtracks will not want to miss this rare chance to see Goblin play live. And be sure to get there in time to catch the opening act Zombi. Now check out these classic Goblin tunes and tell me what you favorite horror movie is in the comments!
