Regardless of how you feel about the election results this week I think we can all agree it’s been a long and stressful election and we all could stand to blow off some steam. On Monday, November 14th, we’ll get the chance to do just that when the Swedish melo death masters In Flames perform at the Fillmore Silver Spring! We’re going to be giving away a pair of tickets to this very show to one of you lucky DCHM readers, whether you have an “I Voted” sticker or not! In Flames is probably the most famous of the melodic death metal bands that rose out of the Gothenburg, Sweden, area in the 90s. They’re have a new album out this Friday, titled Battles, and this show will be a great chance to hear some of those brand new songs live! Also on the Forged In Fire Tour is Hellyeah! from Dallas, Texas. Formed by Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul and former Mudvayne vocalist Chad Gray, the band has made a name for themselves in their own right. The opener of the show is a new band from Pennsylvania called From Ashes To New. Their debut album came out in February this year and charted at #53 on Billboard. Gwar is always a fun show to see live and there’s no better way to cap off your Halloween weekend than being recruited into Gwar’s slave pit! But they’re not the only band on this bill; local melo death legends Darkest Hour will be playing this hometown show as well and you know they always go a bit extra hard when they play in DC. Opening the show is a band known as Mutoid Man which features members of Cave In, Converge, All Pigs Must Die and Bröhammer. Pagan Science beer release at Oliver Ales

If you’ve ever wanted to day drink with Metal Chris of DCHeavyMetal.com (and honestly who the hell hasn’t wanted to?) then this Saturday is your chance! He will be at the Oliver Ales brewery in Baltimore this Saturday, October 15th, from noon to 5pm for their release of the Pagan Science double IPA. As usual Metal Chris will have some metal concert tickets to hand out, including pairs of tickets to see Helmet (on 11/7) and Napalm Death, The Black Dahlia Murder and Pig Destroyer (on 11/13) both at the Baltimore Soundstage! Best of all the event is free to attend and it costs nothing to enter to win the tickets!

So what exactly is this Pagan Science beer you ask? It is an 8.5% DIPA showcasing mosaic hops that is inspired by the sophomore album by the Austin based doom/psych band The Well. The album Pagan Science is released this Friday on Riding Easy Records, then the beer Pagan Science is released at Oliver Ales on Saturday, and to top it all off The Well will be playing the Metro Gallery on Sunday! The event is free to attend so if you’re in the Baltimore area on Saturday stop by Oliver Ales, try the Pagan Science beer and if you’re lucky you’ll end up with a free pair of tickets to an upcoming metal show too!

Brujeria is the Spanish word for witchcraft and the band keeps the identities of its members a secret. There have been members of Fear Factory, Faith No More, Carcass, Napalm Death and many others all rumored to be members though, and if you’re at the show you can try to peek under their bandanas and figure out their identities, at your own risk of course! Brujeria isn’t a band to be fucked with! Also on the bill is the vegetarian death metal band Cattle Decapitation, a band who keeps putting out solid death metal albums regularly. The tour opener is Piñata Protest, a punk band from San Antonio, Texas and local support is provided by the grind band Ampallang Infection. Opeth have been one of the leading bands in the progressive metal world since they released their debut album, Orchid, back in 1995. The band’s 12th studio album, Sorceress, is being released on the very same day as this show. That means we’ll be some of the first to hear these new songs live, as well as some of the band’s older classics from throughout the years as well. But let’s not forget the opening act on this tour, The Sword. Normally a headliner in their own right, The Sword will be opening shows on this tour with their catchy brand of doom metal. It’s not every day you get to see two great bands from such different subgenres on the same bill so this is not a show to be missed. I suppose guitar virtuoso Devin Townsend can be called a legend of progressive metal, though really his music is more “out there” than what is typically considered prog. The brand new DTP album, Transcendence came out today (Fri, Sept 9th) and this tour will be our first chance to hear Heavy Devy play some of those songs live. Also on the bill is the North Carolina based progressive Between The Buried And Me. BTBAM seems like a perfect support band for Devin Townsend, I’m surprised I haven’t seen them tour together before. The opening act is Fallujah, a proggy deathcore band that is actually from San Francisco, not Afghanistan.
