Headbanger’s Hangover Radio Show Now Airs Saturdays at 6pm

The Headbanger’s Hangover radio show that I host every weekend has moved from Sunday mornings to Saturday evenings at 6pm! Since the show isn’t in the morning any more I have changed the name to the Metal Embassy, yes, the same name of my short lived podcast. You can listen to the Metal Embassy radio show live in the DMV area on 1190 AM every Saturday from 6pm to 7pm or livestream it here OR if you are busy at that time you can listen to the latest episode any time during the week by going here and clicking “download latest episode” to either stream it (left click) or download it as an mp3 (right click).

I’ve been trying to do something different on Metal Embassy than what I’ve heard out there in other places. I’ve found that Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and YouTube Music are all suggesting new music to people based on similar algorithms that are designed to steer people to larger and more established bands. I’m not saying larger bands shouldn’t get promotion, hell I’ll even play some on the show when they release something interesting, but maybe they shouldn’t be the only bands getting promotion, ya know? So with that in mind each week I’m scouring local releases, national bands and bands from all over the world (yes the entire world, not just the Western world) for new hard rock and heavy metal music. If you’re looking for a metal show to play a bunch of classic Slayer and Metallica songs this is not it. If you’re frustrated trying to find new music beyond the same old algorithm suggestions, well give my show a listen and maybe you’ll discover some new bands at least. Additionally, near the end of each episode I talk about the upcoming week’s metal shows in the DMV area and I’ll usually play a track or two by some of those bands to help you discover some new live music as well. You’re not going to find a show that does that anywhere else!

To give you an idea of what the show is about, check out this past week’s track list (4/9/2022), and give it a listen here.

Heavy metal from Kenya on the new Metal Embassy podcast episode

Metal Chris speaks with Preston and Barbara, the vocalist and drummer, respectively, of the Nairobi, Kenya, based metal band Chovu on this episode. They cover a wide range of topics from African mysticism and mythology to what it is like to be a woman in a heavy metal band in Kenya.

The New Metal Embassy podcast episode explores The Simpsons with Dr Colossus

I wanted to do a light hearted episode this time and what could be better for that than talking to Jono Colliver of Dr. Colossus, a stoner/doom metal band from Australia that is dedicated to the Simpsons TV show. They just released a new album in May titled, “I’m a Stupid Moron With an Ugly Face and A Big Butt and my Butt Smells and I Like to Kiss My Own Butt” and as you’ll quickly be able to tell by listening to the track “Pickabar” at the end of the episode, unlike most funny theme bands, they’ve actually got some sick riffs!

New Metal Embassy episode about overcoming the murder of a band member

On this episode Metal Chris interviews Rodrigo Salguero of the Salvadorian death/thrash metal band Apes of God. The band’s vocalist was murdered on stage during a performance in 2019 and Rodrigo explains how the band managed to overcome this tragedy and continue on, even recording a new full length album that was just released in April. For some reason this story was never really covered much in the English press, until now!

New Metal Embassy episode details the history of metal in China

May is AAPI Heritage Month so who better to interview on the Metal Embassy podcast than Kaiser Kuo? He is a founding member of the first heavy metal band in China, Tang Dynasty (唐朝), as well as his later band Spring and Autumn (春秋), both of which blend Chinese music traditions with heavy metal. In this episode Metal Chris talks with Kaiser about the early days of heavy metal in China and his instrumental role in bringing heavy metal to the country in the late 1980s. Since I usually try to keep my episodes at about half an hour in length I made a shorter and longer version of this particular episode, both of which can be streamed below. First is the longer version with an extra ~12 minutes of interview with Kaiser, and below that you can stream the shorter version that clocks in around 35 minutes. And if that still isn’t enough, you can listen to the first time I interviewed him, on The Bridge with John St. Augustine podcast, back in November here. You can also follow the Metal Embassy podcast in most podcast apps (listed/linked here).

New Metal Embassy episode interviews Palestinian metal band

Amir Jacob is the man behind the Palestinian black metal band Zalaam and this episode’s interview with Metal Chris is Amir’s first interview about his band. Amir gives insight into how his environment influences the music of Zalaam and of course we listen to a song by the band at the end of the episode as well.
