This blog specializes in heavy metal music and how it relates to Washington DC and the surrounding area. Featuring info on upcoming metal concerts in Washington DC, Baltimore and Virginia, as well as info on local bands, area concert venues, reviews of live gigs, and lots of give aways.
I was a guest on the latest episode of DCBeer.com‘s podcast, The DC Beer Show. I talk about the fallout from the sudden shut down (to the public) of Atlas brewery’s Ivy City location, how the local metal scene got involved with the local beer scene to begin with, and how we’re starting to get metal shows going at the DC Brau brewery! Click the play button below to listen or see the post on DC Beer here.
Metal Chris speaks with Preston and Barbara, the vocalist and drummer, respectively, of the Nairobi, Kenya, based metal band Chovu on this episode. They cover a wide range of topics from African mysticism and mythology to what it is like to be a woman in a heavy metal band in Kenya.
May is AAPI Heritage Month so who better to interview on the Metal Embassy podcast than Kaiser Kuo? He is a founding member of the first heavy metal band in China, Tang Dynasty (唐朝), as well as his later band Spring and Autumn (春秋), both of which blend Chinese music traditions with heavy metal. In this episode Metal Chris talks with Kaiser about the early days of heavy metal in China and his instrumental role in bringing heavy metal to the country in the late 1980s. Since I usually try to keep my episodes at about half an hour in length I made a shorter and longer version of this particular episode, both of which can be streamed below. First is the longer version with an extra ~12 minutes of interview with Kaiser, and below that you can stream the shorter version that clocks in around 35 minutes. And if that still isn’t enough, you can listen to the first time I interviewed him, on The Bridge with John St. Augustine podcast, back in November here. You can also follow the Metal Embassy podcast in most podcast apps (listed/linked here).
Happy 4/20 everyone! First I’d like to mention that a few metal shows have been announced and so the DCHM upcoming concert calendar is back in order and you can see it here. Also, the fourth episode of the Metal Embassy podcast is now live and if I’d thought about this with a bit of foresight I’d probably have gotten a stoner band for the interview. Instead I did an interview with George Gabrielyan of the one man black metal band Gloosh that is based out of Siberia, Russia. This interview is my first to use an interpreter and I cannot thank Alexi Khalchenia enough for coming to my studio and doing the translation work. George first turned down the interview because his English is not good enough but he changed his mind when I offered to find an interpreter so this episode would not have been possible without Alexi’s help. This is George’s first interview using an interpreter and my first as well.
You can listen to this episode on the player below or by searching for Metal Embassy in most podcast apps (such as Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Pandora, Amazon Music/Audible, iHeartRadio and more). I also made an alternate version of this podcast with the interview entirely in Russian (all English parts edited out) and that is only available on the Metal Embassy Bandcamp page here.
The second episode of the Metal Embassy podcast is now live! On this episode I speak with Fawaz Al-Shawaf of the Saudi Arabian grind band Creative Waste. He organized the first above ground metal show in Saudi Arabia and he talks about the entire history of live metal concerts in the country and what it’s like being a metal head there. After the interview you can listen to a song off Creative Waste’s latest album, Condemned.
You can listen by clicking the play button below or you can find it (and subscribe to future episodes) on most podcast apps including Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music and more by opening the app and searching for “Metal Embassy” or you can just go here for the full list of links.
Metal Embassy – 002 – Creative Waste (Saudi Arabia)
With the shutdown of concerts it has been pretty quiet here on DCHM. So with my spare time I’ve decided to try making a podcast for DCHM since there just aren’t enough of those right now. I’m calling the podcast Metal Embassy since I’m still based out of DC but will be changing things up a bit on the podcast and focusing on metal bands from around the world. Each episode will feature an interview with a member from a metal band but unlike the regular interviews here on DCHM I won’t be transcribing them. I’ll play a tune by the band and hopefully expose people to some new music out there as well as explore some of the stories that aren’t being covered very much in the metal press here in the US. I’m still working on getting Metal Embassy registered with all the podcast apps like Apple, Google, Spotify and such, and I’ve got three episodes ready to go but for now you can stream the first episode from the podcast at the end of this post or go to the Metal Embassy page on Podbean (here) where it is being hosted. You can also download it and all future episodes from the Podbean link.
Anyways, this first episode features an interview with Kris Lesiński, the guitarist and cover artist for the Star Wars themed instrumental stoner/doom band Bantha Rider. They’re based in Poland and we have a nice little convo about Star Wars, metal, and the metal scene in Poland. Give it a listen and feel free to give me some feedback as I’m still figuring it all out.
