Deafheaven plays a rather hypnotic style of black metal that fans of Alcest, Wolves In The Throne Room and Krallice will enjoy, though they’ve put their own California style take on the sound. Their new album, Sunbather, takes the standard frozen wintery darkness commonly associated with black metal and does a full 180 with its imagery of summer heat, blinding sunlight and sunburnt skin. Give the album’s title track a listen on the YouTube video below. The song is 10 minutes long but it goes to a lot of different places in that time and is definitely worth the full listen. Also on this tour is Marriages. They’re based out of LA and not really a metal band but two of the members, Greg Burns and Emma Ruth Rundle, are both from Red Sparowes. The opener is a electonic/doom band from Baltimore named Curse. I’ve posted a song by each band below so give them a listen and tell me who your favorite USBM band is!

  1. I’d probably have to go with Leviathan, although Sunbather is amazing. If Deafheaven keeps it up they’ll probably usurp Leviathan’s place on my personal USBM list.

  2. Von.

  3. Deafheaven duh!!! Their music is so genuine and complete.

  4. Gonna have to say Liturgy, though Deafheaven are pretty awesome too!

  5. Deafheaven since woods of Ypres is technically from Canada.

  6. Bastard Sapling all the way.

  7. Negative Plane. Absolutely no contest. Most interesting “black metal” band right now, these guys “get it.”

  8. I love Leviathan, but they’ve already been mentioned, so I’ll go with Absu.

  9. not sure if agalloch fits neatly into the bm category, but there are enough elements there and i do love them so.

  10. I honestly don’t really know any USBM, so I’ll have to go with Abigail Williams.

  11. I’ll go with Wolves in the Throne Room, they’re just so good!

  12. Does Agalloch count? Ha. I have to say Inquisition, Krallice, and Nachtmystium are great, as well as Deafheaven!

  13. Agalloch!

  14. Wolves in the Throne Room (Agalloch 2nd choice – Cobalt 3rd)

  15. Absu!

  16. Agalloch

  17. Leviathan

  18. If there’s a gun to my head and I can only pick one USBM band, it’s Wolves in the Throne Room. Besides Absu, all my other USBM favorites are my shaky attempts at finding another American band rooted in black metal I enjoy that much.

  19. I love me some Nachtmystium. Wolves in The Throne Room is a close second!

  20. Cobalt! Killer set at MDF, and they were all cool guys when I ran info them later during the festival.

  21. Weakling would have to be my favorite USBM band. Wolves in the Throne Room are a close second.

  22. I’d have to go with Weakling as well. Dead as Dreams was fucking incredible!

  23. Ash Borer hands down.
