It’s been a little while since I made a Metal Show Of The Week post but this upcoming show is just so damn good I had to! Downfall Of Gaia is a German black metal band that is signed to Metal Blade and they’re touring the US to support their 2014 full length release Aeon Unveils the Thrones of Decay. The band played DC once before, back in 2011 at an Ethiopian restaurant just a few doors down from DC9 actually. I was there and that show was incredible despite the very DIY sound system so I can’t wait to see them in a proper venue this time. The band has matured since 2011 and their new material is both atmospheric and aggressive, simply put this is some excellent European black metal and we’re getting a rare chance to see these guys play live. The best part? It’s just $10 to get in the door! When was the last time you saw a band from Europe playing a legit venue around here for $10?

There’s some great locals on this bill too. The doom band Foehammer will be playing, you may remember seeing them as the first band to play at my holiday party last month at the Pinch. They’re loud, slow and heavy as hell! Opening the show will be local band black metal Myopic who are always worth getting there early to see. And if you’re in Baltimore the tour will be at the Metro Gallery the night before, Sunday, January 25th, with the bands Set And Setting, Sannhet and Barbelith. Still not convinced? Napalm Death + Voivod ticket give away

One of the original grind bands is teaming up with one of the original Canadian thrash bands when Napalm Death and Voivod join forces for the Through Space And Grind Tour! The tour’s only stop in our area is on Saturday, January 31st at the Baltimore SoundStage and because this show is going to be so sick we’re going to give away a pair of tickets to one of you loyal DCHM readers! To enter just leave a comment on this post telling me which band on the tour you want to see the most (choose from Napalm Death, Voivod, Exhumed, Iron Reagan, Black Crown Initiate or Ringworm). UK grind gods Napalm Death always put on a great live show and Voivod haven’t played the area since they played Maryland Deathfest in 2011! In addition there will be sets by the Carcass inspired gorey death meta band Exhumed and crossover thrash by Richmond’s Iron Reagan, a wild band featuring the vocalist and bass player of Municipal Waste! Black Crown Initiate will be playing their proggy death metal and Cleveland based thrash-core band Ringworm will get the mosh pits started early! You’ve got to admit that’s a hell of a line up,l and for under $20 too! DC Tattoo Expo ticket give away

This Friday, January 16th through Sunday, January 18th, the 5th annual DC Tattoo Expo will be going on at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in the Crystal City area of Arlington, Virginia. I went last year and had a great time and so I’d like to give you the chance to go to so we’re giving away a free pair of single day passes to the DC Tattoo Expo to one of you lucky readers! To enter: just tell me which day you’d like to attend, Friday, Saturday or Sunday, and on Thursday, January 15th at 4pm I’ll pick one valid entry at random (using Random.org) to get the pair of tickets to go on the day they selected. Be sure to use a valid email you check regularly so I can contact you if you win. Don’t worry, I won’t add you to any spam lists or sell your info or anything sleazy like that. So what exactly is there to do at a tattoo expo? Well for starters if you’ve been thinking about getting some new ink it’s a great place to browse the hundreds of artists there (see the full list here), many of whom will tattoo you right there at the expo. There are many tattoo artists from all over the country that will be there, including several from the reality shows Best Ink and Ink Master, as well as other famous tattoo artists. In addition there will also be dozens of artists from around the DMV area so if you’re looking for a new tattoo artist to get some serious work done with, this is a great chance to discover them without driving around to a dozen shops. Chris Saint Clark of Nashville put an awesome Cthulhu tattoo on my leg there last year (see it here) and he’ll be there this year again too, and there’s tons of other great artists as well! There will also be tattoo contests for many categories including a worst tattoo contest where the winner will get a free cover up! And there’s also the Miss DC Pin-Up Contest which is open to all women and will have a $500 cash prize for 1st place! So if you’ve never been to a tattoo convention before, or you have but would like to get in free this time, just let me know which day you’d like to go in the comments below!
