As The Palaces Burn is a new documentary about Richmond metal band Lamb Of God and select cities are getting special screenings of it which, lucky for us, includes Washington DC. On Tuesday, March 4th (that’s Tuesday of next week!) the Howard Theatre will be showing the movie for DC area metal fans. This is a band documentary like no other (there’s more details on what it is about in the next paragraph) and DCHM is giving away a free pair of tickets to this screening to one of you readers of the site. In 2012 Lamb Of God embarked on a world tour with a film crew following them along as they played in different cities around the world. As The Palaces Burn, named after the band’s 2003 album with the same name, starts as a sort of tour diary with behind the scenes interviews with band members and interactions with fans encountered on the tour. Where this documentary takes a drastic turn was when Lamb Of God arrives in the city of Prague in the Czech Republic to play a show. Their vocalist, Randy Blythe, was arrested for manslaughter upon their arrival for an incident that allegedly took place at a Lamb Of God concert in Prague years before involving the death of a fan. The documentary follows the legal and other issues they all face as the tour is halted immediately and Randy’s freedom, and the band’s very existence, are in jeopardy. The best thing about this documentary is you don’t even have to be a fan of Lamb Of God to enjoy As The Palaces Burn as it tells an intense tale that no other movie about a band does. If you’ve never been to the Howard Theatre before you’ll find that it is just off the U Street Corridor near the 9:30 Club, DC9 and Velvet Lounge. The historic building was originally built in 1910 and eventually closed only to be reopened in 2012 after $29 million in renovations. It’s a beautiful building inside and out and should be a great place to sit back with a beer and watch As The Palaces Burn. Please note that this film screening is a seated event. The Sword is the biggest and best doom metal band from Austin, Texas and they’re coming to DC on Friday, February 21st at the Rock & Roll Hotel on H Street. DCHM is pretty excited about the show and so we’re giving away a pair of tickets to see this very show! The Sword burst onto the metal scene in 2006 but they play an old school style of doom with a stoner edge full of fat riffs and catchy hooks. This show is sponsored by DC Brau as well as Baltimore’s Oliver Ales and both will have special beers at this show. DC Brau will be debuting their new double IPA Solar Abyss (which is about 10%!) and Baltimore’s Oliver Ales will have their The Sword: Winter’s Wolves dark ale on draft as well. To make things even better both beers will have big discounts on price for the show. Drinking a The Sword: Winter’s Wolves while The Sword plays their song Winter’s Wolves live in front of you can definitely happen at this show! Let’s not forget about the other bands though, Big Business is a Seattle based sludge band featuring two members of The Melvins. This isn’t just some Melvins spin off though, they’re pretty damn good (and have a great sense of humor as well). The opening act is O’Brother from Atlanta, a heavy rock band that should be a perfect start to this show. Dark Tranquillity released their album Construct back in May but I’m sure they’ll be playing classic songs from their older albums like Damage Done and Character too. The Swedes aren’t the only band from Scandinavia on this tour though as Finland’s Omnium Gatherum will be bringing their own brand of melo death to the Baltimore SoundStage as well. There will also be support from LA thrashers Exmortus that you won’t want to miss. Local support comes from Pennsylvania’s March To Victory. Russian Circles gave us the moody album Memorial in late October and this will be their first area appearance since its release. That’s not all to look forward to at this show though, there’s also going to be support from KEN mode, a sick Canadian hardcore/noise band. The opening act is a personal favorite of mine, Richmond’s Inter Arma. These guys released an incredible album on Relapse in 2013, titled Sky Burial, and their live shows are even better. Metal Night V at the Pinch

Hopefully a bunch of you already know about the next metal night I’m doing with the awesome brewers over at Port City Brewery (Facebook event page here). It’s this Saturday, December 14th and we’ll be playing metal tunes all night as usual but this time we’re changing things up a bit and moving it to the Pinch in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington DC (address and map here). There’s a few reasons for this change of venue, the main one is that we can now run much later than the 9pm curfew we had at the actual brewery in Alexandria (that was due to parking restrictions). Another reason is by moving it into the city it’s now Metro accessible, that means you can get there and leave from the Columbia Heights Metro Station which is just 1/2 mile south of the Pinch on the same street. There’s also plenty of street parking around the venue and don’t worry, Columbia Heights is a really nice neighborhood so you don’t have to worry about your car. The venue is a full service bar and restaurant so you can get food there and let me tell you it’s great food! I highly recommend the waffle fries with duck and BBQ sauce. In addition to all of this the venue also has a small stage downstairs and the guys in Borracho are going to play a special set for us this evening. This isn’t really a concert though, there’s no other bands playing, but we thought it would be cool since Port City has brewed a small batch of the Borracho Smokin’ Brown Ale just for this event! There will be many of your favorite Port City beers available all night too. In addition to all of that I’ll be there giving away prizes throughout the night, including concert tickets to the following upcoming metal shows: Amon Amarth/Enslaved, Children Of Bodom/Death Angel, Carcass/The Black Dahlia Murder, Darkest Hour/Pig Destroyer, Morbid Saint, Iced Earth, Between The Buried And Me/Deafheaven, Metal Church, Chimaira, Mobile Deathcamp and more! The doors open at 6pm and the event runs all night but the ticket give aways will be at intervals between 8pm and midnight, and Borracho will play during that time as well.

And as usual we’ll be playing a metal set list all night (well, except when Borracho is playing) and Will wants your song requests! Don’t wait til the day of cause he’ll be busy setting things up and he might not have time to get to it before everything starts.

Goblin ticket give away

OK so Goblin isn’t exactly a metal band, but since the Italian progressive group has been recording horror movie soundtracks since the 70s I figured there’s a good amount of cross over here and some of you metal heads might want to check these guys out when they play the 9:30 Club on Friday, December 13th. Goblin is famous for composing music for underground horror classics like Suspiria, George Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead, Deep Red, Profondo Rosso and many more! If you’re not familiar with the band I highly recommend you check out this beginner’s guide to Goblin here, and of course check out a few of the songs I’ve got streaming at the end of this post. In 40 years the band has never come to North America, until now, and who knows if they’ll ever tour here again so fans of horror movie soundtracks will not want to miss this rare chance to see Goblin play live.
