There’s a couple of kick ass metal shows coming up in the next few weeks at Jiffy Lube Live and DCHeavyMetal.com wants to make sure as many of you can go to these shows as possible! Rockstar Energy Drink’s Mayhem Fest is headlined by Rob Zombie this year and will be at JLL on Wednesday, July 24th and we’re giving away a pair of pit tickets to it! Ozzy Osbourne is back with Black Sabbath and they’re coming to JLL on Friday, August 2nd and we’re giving away a pair of seated tickets to that show as well! To enter: Just leave a comment on this post telling me which concert you want to go to and why. You can enter for both if you want, but you can only win tickets to one of the concerts. On Friday, July 19th at 5pm EST I’ll use Random.org to select 2 winners, one for each show, to win a pair of tickets to the show they chose. Now here’s a little more info on each show…

This year’s Mayhem Fest will have over 18 bands playing on four stages! On the main stage you’ll find Rob Zombie, Five Finger Death Punch, Mastodon and Amon Amarth, the last of which will be bringing a giant viking ship on stage (you can catch a glimpse of it in the video below)! But don’t think there aren’t any bands worth seeing on the other stages. Machine Head, Children Of Bodom, Job For A Cowboy, Battlecross, Huntress, Scorpion Child and many more are going to be tearing it up on those stages as well. It’s going to be a hell of a day for metal!

Just last month Black Sabbath put out their new album 13 (read our review of it here), the band’s first full length with Ozzy Osbourne since 1978! The godfathers of heavy metal will be playing their classics along with some of the new material for a show that is going to please metal fans young and old. I’m not sure what else I should really write here, it’s fucking Black Sabbath, if you’re a metal head then you need to be there!

Deafheaven plays a rather hypnotic style of black metal that fans of Alcest, Wolves In The Throne Room and Krallice will enjoy, though they’ve put their own California style take on the sound. Their new album, Sunbather, takes the standard frozen wintery darkness commonly associated with black metal and does a full 180 with its imagery of summer heat, blinding sunlight and sunburnt skin. Give the album’s title track a listen on the YouTube video below. The song is 10 minutes long but it goes to a lot of different places in that time and is definitely worth the full listen. Also on this tour is Marriages. They’re based out of LA and not really a metal band but two of the members, Greg Burns and Emma Ruth Rundle, are both from Red Sparowes. The opener is a electonic/doom band from Baltimore named Curse. I’ve posted a song by each band below so give them a listen and tell me who your favorite USBM band is!

Lamb Of God is touring with The Acacia Strain from Massachusetts and Decapitated who are coming all the way from Poland. This show will be the first concert Lamb Of God plays in the area since Randy Blythe was acquitted of manslaughter charges in the Czech Republic. If you’ve never been to Rams Head Live then this will be a great chance to check out one of Baltimore’s premiere venues. It’s downtown in the Inner Harbor area and surrounded by bars and restaurants. Torche plays a sort of stoner metal and rock hyrbid that is full of great riffs, and they are really fun to watch live. This show should be a lot of fun! They’re playing with Canadian hardcore band KEN mode as well as the excellent Ohio based band Lo-Pan. Hell, even if you don’t win you should come out to this show, it’s going to be a lot of fun on a summer Saturday night! The wild Norwegian band Kvelertak will be playing their first ever concert in the Washington DC area when they come to the Rock & Roll Hotel on Sunday, May 19th, 2013. The last time they headlined a US tour the closest they came to the area was Philadelphia so I drove up there to see them. They were totally insane live and well worth all the driving! I want to make sure as many people get to check this band out as possible so this week on DCHeavyMetal.com we’re giving away a pair of tickets to a lucky reader of the site. Kvelertak is a rock/punk/metal band from Norway that packs every song with tons of high energy riffs. Hell even their transitions are catchy. They have found the perfect blend of rock, punk, thrash and even black metal and if you don’t get excited listening to these guys you might not have a pulse! They put on a great live show that you won’t want to miss and this show is a perfect chance for us in the DC area to finally see them live. All of their songs are in Norwegian but it doesn’t matter if you know the language or not cause music this great is the universal language! Check out the animated video of their song Blodtørst (which means bloodlust in Norwegian) posted below and watch the blood flow! Also on this tour is the Toronto based punk rock band Cancer Bats and the Savannah, Georgia sludge metal trio Black Tusk. The local support is provided by Black Clouds, a dark and moody rock band with a great light show. Now watch these videos by each band playing this show and give me your reason for wanting to go to this awesome show. It shouldn’t be hard to think of one!

Want A Three Day Pass To Maryland Deathfest XI?

I was recently contacted by a very generous metal head in Colorado by the name of Ian MacAyeal. Months ago he purchased a Sonar compound only three day pass to Maryland Deathfest XI for Friday, May 24th through Sunday May 26th. To make a long story short, he had shit come up and rather than sell the ticket, valued at $155, he asked me to find a good home for it. To that end I talked to the heavy metal fanatics at Black Mess Records, an underground heavy metal shop in Baltimore (they’ll also have a vendor booth at Maryland Deathfest) and we came up with a cool way to give the ticket away. Starting today at Black Mess, from May 10th, through Sunday, May 19th, any in-store purchase of $25 (before tax) or more will get you entered into a raffle to win the ticket. If you purchase any item (CDs, vinyl, patches, tshirts, etc…) by any band that will be playing this year’s Maryland Deathfest you will get an extra entry into the drawing. This is a good chance to stock up on anything you might want to get signed by bands who will be hanging out in the new fan signing area at this year’s Deathfest. The winner will be chosen at 7pm on May 19th and the ticket will be held for them at will call.
