Power Trip is a Dallas, Texas based crossover thrash band known for their high energy shows! Their 2013 album Manifest Decimation was a hit with fans and critics and now they’ll be headlining the Rock & Roll Hotel for what is sure to be a sweaty night of moshing and headbanging! Foreseen is a thrash band from Finland that came out of nowhere when they released their debut album, Helsinki Savagery late in 2014, one of the year’s best metal releases. Those two bands playing this show should be enough to get you out for this but there will also be sets by local crossover thrash band Red Death and local harDCore band Protestor. Now check out these sick tunes below while you decide tell me in the comments what your favorite thrash metal song is!

Power Trip – Crossbreaker

Foreseen – Bonded By United Blood

Goatwhore ticket give away

Goatwhore at Rock & Roll Hotel

The New Orleans based band Goatwhore is coming to the Rock & Roll Hotel on Thursday, July 9th of 2015 along with Ringworm, Black Breath and Theories. Since you don’t want to miss a line up like that we’re going to give away a free pair of tickets to this show to one of you lucky DCHM readers! To enter just leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite Goatwhore song is. If you need some help you can check out their discography here At 5pm EST this Friday, July 3rd, a winner will be chosen at random (using Random.org) from all valid entries to win the pair of tickets. Be sure to enter using a valid email you check regularly so I can contact you if you win. Don’t worry, I won’t add you to any spam lists or sell your info or anything sleazy like that. If I haven’t heard back from the winner within 24 hours another winner will be chosen at random. If you can’t wait to see if you win or the contest is already over when you read this, then you can get tickets from Ticket Fly for $15 here.

Goatwhore has become one of the most popular extreme metal bands from the New Orleans area so it makes sense they’re headlining this tour. There’s some other great bands to see on the tour as well of course, including Ringworm a thrash/hardcore band from Cleveland, Ohio, that has been around since the early 90s. And you definitely don’t want to miss Black Breath, who despite being from Seattle have a sound that fits right with bands like Nihilist, Unleashed, Grave and Dismember. The show’s opener is also from Seattle, but Theories is a brutal death/grind band that will get the crowd pumped up early at this one. Now let me know what your favorite Goatwhore song is in the comments below (or if you’re more into one of the opener bands you can pick one of their songs too of course!) and be sure to check out these songs by the bands playing the show.

Goatwhore – Apocalyptic Havoc

Ringworm – Hammer Of The Witch

Black Breath – Home Of The Grave

Theories – Cycle Of Decay

Live photos of Coliseum, Cloud Rat and Nervous Mothers

On Saturday, September 20th, 2014, I went to the Rock & Roll Hotel at about 5pm to catch a free show by the Kentucky punk rock band Coliseum. This was part of the H Street Festival’s festivities, which had the street shut down for the day. Standing in line just to have my ID checked I was a bit worried that the place would be really packed. The sidewalks outside all the bars had little temporary fences that were packed shoulder to shoulder with hipsters drinking cheap beer as they screamed in each others faces trying to talk over each other. I guess drinking on the sidewalk in a pen is really fucking exciting to some people, but I was here to see Coliseum, a great band I’d seen play a sold out DC9 show with Pelican last November. I had no problem making my way to the front as the main show room was almost empty, except for the people in line to talk to the bartenders. The place did fill up, somewhat, when they started playing. They played for about 45 minutes and their set included a few new songs. It was a lot of fun and you can’t complain about seeing a great band for free. There were several other bands playing that day but after Coliseum played I headed over to Little Miss Whiskey’s to talk to the DC Brau folks (always a fun time).

Later the same night I grabbed dinner and then picked up a six pack (which turned into a 4 pack due to the cardboard handle breaking in the parking lot of the store I had just bought it at) and I went to another show. This was a house show at a place called the Dougout in Northeast DC. I’d never been there before but it was pretty nice for a house venue, especially one that was hosting grind bands. I missed local death/grind band Genocide Pact, which sucks cause they’re good, but I’m sure I’ll get the chance to see them again at least. The first band I did see was Nervous Mothers, a powerviolence band all the way from Belgium. I’m not sure how it’s financially possible to fly all the way over from Europe to play a bunch of gigs in basements but they actually were pretty good. However next up was the band I really came to see, Cloud Rat. The grind trio is from Michigan and they released Moksha, one of my favorite grind albums of 2013 (click the name to give it a listen). They combine brutal riffs and sheer intensity perfectly and their frontwoman, Madison Marshall, has a voice that just drips frustration. In all it was a really great show at a cool DIY venue, I hope they get some more brutal bands there in the future.

Earth ticket give away

Earth at the Rock & Roll Hotel

Earth, the originators of drone, are coming to the Rock & Roll Hotel this Sunday, September 21st and since the band is a must see we’re giving away a pair of tickets to catch them at this very show! Earth isn’t really super intense so to enter leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite metal (or metal-ish) song/album to chill out to is. Not everything has to be brutal right? At 5pm EST this Friday, September 19th, a winner will be chosen at random (using Random.org) from all valid entries to receive two tickets to the show! Be sure to use a valid email you check regularly so I can contact you if you win. Don’t worry, I won’t add you to any spam lists or sell your info or anything sleazy like that. If I haven’t heard back from the winner in 24 hours another winner will be chosen at random. Please don’t enter if you know you can’t attend, the contest ends just 2 days before the show so I don’t have time to keep picking winners and waiting to hear back. If you can’t wait to see if you win, or the contest is already over when you read this, then you can get tickets right now for $14 from Ticket Fly here.

Earth is from Seattle, Washington and they play a unique style of instrumental drone that experiments with various instruments and sounds but is always very sloooow. As a bit of extra trivia, the band’s main man, Dylan Carlson, was a noted close friend of Kurt Cobain. Apparently they were room mates at one point and Carlson even gave Cobain the shotgun he would later famously kill himself with as a gift. Note that Carlson is prone to seizures so all flash photography is banned at this show, even from your phone. If you do use a flash they will stop the show and you’ll be kicked out. It’s ok though, Earth shows are an experience and the loss of random flashes going off during their set is not a bad thing. The opening act on this tour is King Dude, who you may remember opening for Ghost at the Fillmore back in May. King Dude is also from Seattle but they’ve got a bit more of a rocking attitude and sound. Be sure to check out these awesome songs by Earth and King Dude below as you tell me what metal you like chilling out to the most in the comments below.

Earth – Torn By The Fox Of The Crescent Moon

Earth – Rise To Glory

King Dude – Fear Is All You Know

Kvelertak ticket give away

Kvelertak at the Rock And Roll Hotel

The wild Norwegian band Kvelertak will be playing their first ever concert in the Washington DC area when they come to the Rock & Roll Hotel on Sunday, May 19th, 2013. The last time they headlined a US tour the closest they came to the area was Philadelphia so I drove up there to see them. They were totally insane live and well worth all the driving! I want to make sure as many people get to check this band out as possible so this week on DCHeavyMetal.com we’re giving away a pair of tickets to a lucky reader of the site. To enter just tell me why you want to go to this show in the comments section at the end of this post. At 5pm EST on Friday, May 17th, 2013, the contest will close and a winner will be chosen at random (using Random.org) from all valid entries to get the free pair of seated tickets to the show. If I don’t hear from the winner within 24 hours then I’ll randomly pick another person to get the tickets, however please don’t enter if you know you can’t go. Be sure to enter with a valid email address you check regularly so I can contact you if you win. Don’t worry, win or lose I won’t add you to any email lists or anything like that, I hate spam too. If you enter more than once then all of your entries will be disqualified. If you can’t wait to see if you win the tickets, or the contest is already over when you read this, you can buy them for $15 from Ticket Alternative here.

Kvelertak is a rock/punk/metal band from Norway that packs every song with tons of high energy riffs. Hell even their transitions are catchy. They have found the perfect blend of rock, punk, thrash and even black metal and if you don’t get excited listening to these guys you might not have a pulse! They put on a great live show that you won’t want to miss and this show is a perfect chance for us in the DC area to finally see them live. All of their songs are in Norwegian but it doesn’t matter if you know the language or not cause music this great is the universal language! Check out the animated video of their song Blodtørst (which means bloodlust in Norwegian) posted below and watch the blood flow! Also on this tour is the Toronto based punk rock band Cancer Bats and the Savannah, Georgia sludge metal trio Black Tusk. The local support is provided by Black Clouds, a dark and moody rock band with a great light show. Now watch these videos by each band playing this show and give me your reason for wanting to go to this awesome show. It shouldn’t be hard to think of one!

Warchild & Black Clouds ticket give away

So Xmas has come and gone again and every year there always seems to be one present you really wanted yet you somehow didn’t get. Maybe it was a bb gun one year, a Tickle Me Elmo another year, or even an iPad. Well DCHeavyMetal.com has your ass covered this year cause we’re giving away a pair of tickets to see Warchild and Black Clouds on Saturday December 29th at the Rock & Roll Hotel! While you were faking laughs at the stupid gag gifts you got and pretending to be really thankful for the Olive Garden gift card you received, DCHM was working behind the scenes with Satan’s Claws to be sure you still had a chance at the must have gift this holiday season! That’s right, you’ve gotten your fill of jolly holiday jingles, now it’s time to fucking thrash! This isn’t some pregame for New Year’s Eve, this is going to be a full on party loaded with beer chugging, head banging and general chaos! You know you’ve got some post-holiday angst you’ve been keeping pent up while you had to deal with relatives, and now you know how to get it all out! But wait, there’s more: the winner will receive not only a free pair of tickets to the show, but also a Warchild t-shirt and a Warchild beer coozy! This might just be your best Christmas yet! Now check out this awesome video flyer and get all the details on how to enter below!

To enter just leave a comment at the end of this post that tells me about your worst holiday experience ever! Maybe your grandma cussed out your new girlfriend one year, maybe your mom made you wear the ugliest sweater ever, you tell me! One lucky winner will be chosen at random (using Random.org) from all valid entries once the contest closes at 5pm EST on Friday, December 28th. Be sure to enter using a valid email address that you check regularly so I can contact you about the tickets once you win. Don’t worry, I won’t add you to any spam lists or anything like that, I hate that shit too. If you know you can’t make the show please don’t enter, I want to give these to someone who is in need of a post holiday party!

If you don’t know Warchild (what the fuck is wrong with you?) then you already win, cause their six song demo is available to stream and download free here. They sound like Kill ‘Em All era Metallica if they partied like they were in Municipal Waste! Of course there’s another local band playing as well, Black Clouds. They’re not thrash but they’re damn good. The band is moody as hell and sure knows how to suck and audience into their mind melt world of doom and gloom. Check out their song Santorum Sunday School on YouTube below, it features Neil Fallon, frontman of Clutch, doing spoken word vocals and it’s intense! Now enough of what I’ve got to say. Check out this sick Warchild video and that killer Black Clouds song I was talking about. Give em a listen as you enter the contest below because YOU HAVE BEEN SUMMONED!
