Clutch ticket give away

Clutch at the 9:30 Club

If you’ve been naughty and all you are getting from Santa is switches and coal then you’re in luck: Maryland’s hardest rockers, Clutch, are coming to the 9:30 Club on Wednesday the 26th of December! Since this is the season to be giving, DCHeavyMetal.com is going to give away a free pair of tickets to this very concert to a lucky one of you readers. To enter just leave a comment at the bottom of this post telling me why you want to see Clutch at the 9:30 Club. Maybe you want to go because you’ve never seen them live or perhaps you want the chance to hear some new songs from their upcoming album Earth Rocker or maybe you just want a good excuse to get the hell away from visiting relatives. At 5pm EST on Friday, December 14th, 2012, the contest will close and a winner will be chosen at random (using Random.org) from all valid entries to get the free pair of tickets to the show. If I don’t hear from the winner in 24 hours then I’ll randomly pick another person to get the tickets. Please don’t enter if you cannot attend. Be sure to enter with a valid email address you check regularly so I can contact you if you win. Don’t worry, I won’t add you to any email lists or anything like that, I hate spam too. If you enter more than once then all of your entries will be disqualified. If the contest is over when you read this or you simply can’t wait to find out if you win the contest you can buy tickets from Ticket Fly for $29 here.

Most of you should be familiar with Clutch’s music even if you don’t have any of their albums. Their music has been featured all over the place (as evidenced here) such as during NFL football highlights on Fox, on the TV show the Walking Dead, in various movies and video games and the Vancouver Canucks even use one of their songs when celebrating a goal being scored! You can bet they’ll be playing a bunch of their classic songs at this show and if we’re lucky we’ll get to hear some new tracks from their upcoming album Earth Rocker as well. Mondo Generator is a band with close ties to Kyuss and Queens Of The Stone Age, and at various points has featured members of both of those bands. They should be a great support act for this show. Saviours comes from Oakland, California but they’re not an old school thrash throwback by any means. They play some rockin sludge metal and it should be awesome seeing them on the 9:30 Club’s big stage. And be sure to get there early because the opening act is the solo project of Wino, aka Scott Weinrich, who has been a main member of a few bands you may have heard of such as Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan and Shrinebuilder. I hear that for this show Dave Sherman will be joining him as well so perhaps we’ll get to hear a couple of Spirit Caravan songs. Now listen to these classic tunes by the four bands playing while you leave a comment to enter the contest. Good luck everyone!

Gwar ticket give away

Gwar at the 9:30 Club

Gwar, Richmond’s masters of insane on stage antics, land their spaceship in Washington DC on Thursday the 20th of December 2012 at the 9:30 Club. I have been enlisted to recruit more slaves for the scumdogs of the universe so this week on DCHeavyMetal.com you can enter to win a free pair of tickets to this recruitment camp metal concert! To enter just leave a comment at the end of this post telling me why you want to see Gwar at this concert. Will it be your first time seeing their over the top live show? Maybe you’ve got a white shirt that needs more color? Perhaps you want to see their new guitarist, Pustulous Maximus, play his first DC show with the band. Or maybe you just need a classy event to ask that mildly attractive yet attainable seeming girl/boy you see regularly but want to know better to. At 5pm EST on Friday, December 7th, 2012, a winner will be chosen at random (using Random.org) from all valid entries to get the free pair of tickets to the show. If you simply can’t wait to see if you win the contest you can get tickets from Ticket Fly for $25 here.

If you’ve never seen Gwar live then you just don’t know what you’re missing. And you don’t have to take my word for it, even the very un-metal Moby said Gwar is the best live band ever (here). Be sure to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting covered in blood and gore, and keep your politically correct self at home because nobody is safe from the vile torment of Gwar when they’re on stage! The opening acts for this show are two other Richmond bands. Kepone is a recently reformed indie rock band from Richmond and if you’re wondering why they’re on this bill it is because they are fronted by Michael Bishop, the original Gwar bass player “Beefcake The Mighty”. Iron Reagan will open the show. They’re a new band but their line up includes current and former members of the bands Darkest Hour, Municipal Waste and Cannabis Corpse so be sure to get there early enough to see them. Now check out these killer videos with tunes of the bands while you enter the contest in the comments section below!

Journalistic Integrity

So last night, Saturday the first of December 2012, I went to the Rock And Roll Hotel to see Cannibal Corpse play. The show was brutal and fun, as Cannibal Corpse shows tend to be, but unfortunately this isn’t a review of that show.

At the Cannibal Corpse show I was informed that a post I had recently written, namely my review of the Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult show at El Caracol Bar (posted here), has caused the venue to back out of any upcoming metal shows there. That includes the upcoming thirteen band Satan’s Unholy Abomination Fest that was to take place there on December 15th. The fest will still happen on December 15th but it has now been moved from Silver Spring to El Oasis in Baltimore, Maryland, and info on that is posted here. Some Montogomery County inspector stopped by El Caracol last Wednesday and didn’t like how it had hosted the show and I guess that was enough to cause the venue itself to decide to stop hosting metal shows there at all. At last night’s Cannibal Corpse show, I was told about all of this and that my review had been used as some sort of evidence about how things were run there. I was told all of this by someone who is part of putting those metal shows on at El Caracol Bar but I’m not trying to call anyone out or name any names here. Anyways, this person wants me to completely take down my review of the show, or at least edit it drastically to remove the parts I wrote about safety. And that is what brings us to the title of this post.

I can’t in good conscience censor my website like that. I just can’t. I’ve worked too hard to make this site what it is to just take down unpopular posts after they are written. It would be one thing if I had made up stories and lies about the show I went to there but I didn’t. I actually enjoyed the show overall. The person I spoke with said he didn’t want to have to tell everyone that I was the reason the Satan’s Unholy Abomination Fest got moved to Baltimore and that no more shows will happen at El Caracol. I don’t know what they meant exactly by that. Maybe they meant that by outing me some people would stop visiting my site and actively talk trash about it or maybe they meant some of the regulars of the metal shows there would come after me or something. Either way it doesn’t matter, because I’m calling myself out in this post. Even if I did remove the post I don’t think it would make any difference now, the damage is done.

I certainly didn’t want the venue to stop hosting shows there. Hell, I even spoke to several people at that show who told me they wouldn’t have even known about it if not for my site. I love black metal and if there is a way I can help them find a new venue in the area that would host these well attended concerts of underground black metal bands I will gladly do so. I certainly don’t harbor any ill will to them and I’m not trying to create some divide here in the local metal scene. I try very hard to get more people out to more metal shows in the area and it isn’t like this website is paying my bills. I do this because I fucking love heavy metal. I’m sorry that El Caracol isn’t going to host any more metal shows there but even if some sort of authorities were somehow tipped off to the place by my post, I’m not the one who was over serving people and not kicking people out for fighting, and it certainly wasn’t me who constructed the stage or anything else there. I am a writer and I wrote about what I saw and experienced, the good and the bad. That’s what I’m supposed to do. Would you all really prefer my site if I only wrote glowing reviews and complimentary posts about everything? What kind of journalistic integrity would I have then? This isn’t the first time someone has asked me to take a post down or edit content on my site, and it probably won’t be the last. I don’t plan on ever taking down any of my content though. I have to stand for something.

Feel free to leave any comments below you have regarding all of this, even if you want to trash me or this site. I’m not here to censor you either. Tomorrow it’s back to normal on the site and that starts with a new concert ticket give away. Stay metal everyone, and support the scene you’re a part of!

Cannibal Corpse Ticket Give Away

Cannibal Corpse is one of the most infamous death metal bands in history and this Saturday, the 1st of December, they will be playing at the Rock And Roll Hotel in Washington DC! Because this show is going to be absolutely brutal DCHeavyMetal.com is going to give away a free pair of Cannibal Corpse at the Rock & Roll Hoteltickets to one of you readers. All you have to do to enter is leave a comment at the end of this post telling me which Cannibal Corpse song is your favorite (you can see their discography here, just click on an album to see the songs on it). Cannibal Corpse is known for having some of the most gory, disgusting, violent and downright offensive song titles in all of metal so I hope to see some interesting entries! On Friday, November 30th at 5pm EST I’ll pick a winner at random (using Random.org) from all valid entries to win the free pair of tickets to the show. If I don’t hear from you in 24 hours then I’ll pick another winner to get the tickets. Please don’t enter if you cannot attend. Be sure to enter with a valid email address you check regularly so I can contact you if you win. Don’t worry, I won’t add you to any email lists or anything like that, I hate spam too. If you enter more than once then all of your entries will be disqualified. If you simply can’t wait to see if you win the contest you can get tickets from Ticket Alternative for $20 here.

Cannibal Corpse originally formed in Buffalo, New York, but moved to Tampa, Florida to join in the growing death metal scene there. They’ve long been a center of controversy with their brutal lyrics and album covers, setting the bar of shock for countless death metal bands to strive to match. While metal fans tend to look at them, and death metal in general, as the musical equivalent of splatter horror films, politicians like Bob Dole and Joe Lieberman have tried to censor the band and in the 90s Germany and Australia both actually banned their albums from being sold. Despite this the band still continues on and their music has actually gotten faster and more brutal over the years, including on their latest release, Torture, which was released in March of this year. Also on this tour is Misery Index. The band was formed when several members of Dying Fetus left that band however only Jason Netherton remains from the Fetus days. The band has carved out its own sound since then and is one of the best live metal bands you’ll ever see, they absolutely destroy audiences live! Hour Of Penance is an Italian death metal band that is pretty similar in sound to Behemoth actually. Needless to say, they’re pretty damn brutal and should be a perfect opener for this show. You can listen to each of the bands playing in the videos I posted below while you decide which song you want to enter with. Keep it brutal everyone, cause this concert definitely will!

Cannibal Corpse – Encased In Concrete

Misery Index – The Spectator

Hour Of Penance – Sedition Through Scorn

A Black Shirt For Black Friday

Well it is Black Friday and starting today, November 23rd 2012 through Sunday December 2nd I’m going to be doing a presale for DCHeavyMetal.com t-shirts. I’ve had a lot of people ask me about them lately so I’m going to print up another batch. The artwork will be the black and white version of Abe Lincoln in the King Diamond style corpse paint printed on the front a black Gildan tshirt. The artwork, shown below, was drawn by Joshy Brettell (drummer of the local metal band Ilsa) and you can see some more of his awesome artwork here. The shirts are being printed by MiNDJACKET Designs, check them out here and here if you need some shirts made or just like funny shirts. They will be selling various other shirts at the Spellbound Freak Bazaar on Sat the 24th from 5pm to 9pm. Details on that event are posted here.

Now here’s how this is going to work. Instead of guessing how many shirts I need of each size I’m going to let you all tell me by preordering. I am doing this now so that I can have them shipped to everyone before Christmas, because nothing says holiday spirit like a local metal site’s parody shirt of the guy who sings No Presents For Christmas. Just be sure to get your order in to me by December 2nd. The sizes will be US men’s sizes S, M, L, XL and XXL. I might be able to do bigger but you’ll need to contact me before you order if you need that. I’m also going to have girlie shirts available, and they’ll be the same price. The girlie shirts will be sizes S, M, L and XL. So here’s the prices:

$15 per shirt including shipping to anywhere in the US
Add $1.50 per shirt if you are paying via Paypal using a credit/debit card (you do not have to pay the extra $1.50 if you paying with Paypal directly from a bank account).
Add $1 if you need size XXL. If you need a size larger than XXL please email me at DCHeavyMetal@Gmail.com before you order so I can figure out what the price will be and if I can even do it in time for Xmas.

To pay with Paypal go here and send money to:

DCHeavyMetal@Gmail.com

Be sure to include a note in the Message section with whatever address you want the item shipped to and what size you want. If for some reason you don’t send the note properly, just email me from the same email address you made your payment from with the size and shipping info. If you don’t send me the right amount I’m just going to refund your purchase and you’ll have to try again.

I am trying to make this as cheap as possible for everyone. If you don’t want to use Paypal you can just give me cash at an upcoming metal show. During the time this promotion is running you’ll be able to find me at High On Fire at the Rock & Roll Hotel Nov 23rd (details here) and Biipiigwan at Casa Fiesta on Nov 30th (details here) and Cannibal Corpse at the Rock & Roll Hotel Dec 1st (details here). I’ll be the dude with the DSLR, beard and wearing one of these shirts as well so come up and talk to me. If for some reason you need international shipping I am not guaranteeing that for Xmas delivery, and you’ll need to email me at DCHeavyMetal@Gmail.com so we can figure out what shipping to your country will cost. If you are someone who knows me personally already and I see you at shows a lot, email me first and I can drop the shipping charges if you want to just meet me at a metal show or something. Also, I DO NOT want to trade shirts for one from your band or whatever else. I’m not doing this for profit and trading shirts basically turns this into a loss for me. If you want one buy one, I’m not interested in trading. I’m not planning on printing any extra shirts, just what you people order through December 2nd. If you want one now is the time to get one. If you have any other questions, just email me or ask me in person at one of the above mentioned shows.

Thanksgiving Playlist

Today is Thanksgiving Day and I’d like to say thanks to all the readers of this site, bands in the area and the fans who come out to see them. All the work I put into this is totally worth it because of you. Since I love making playlists for pretty much any reason, I’ve made another metal one for Thanksgiving. Just like the playlist I made for Election Day this one was posted to the DCHM Facebook page (here) first however this time I’ve included the commentary for each track as well. Also, if you’re interested in buying a DCHM shirt for either yourself or someone else this holiday season, I’ll be taking orders for about a week starting tomorrow (Black Friday the 23rd of November 2012). All those details will be posted tomorrow. Until then, enjoy this metal mix and try not to start a mosh pit in the kitchen!

OK since I’ve gotta work today I’m going to post a Thxgivin metal mix (stream the entire playlist on YouTube here if you’d like). It’ll give ya something to listen to while ya cook or maybe just help you drown out your relatives. First up is Carved Up by the old school Swedish death metal band Hypocrisy.

Hypocrisy – Carved Up – 1996 Abducted

The Colorado based black metal band Cobalt (who will be performing on the first day of Maryland Deathfest in May) has a sick tune called Eater Of Birds.

Cobalt – Eater Of Birds – 2007 Eater Of Birds

What’s Thanksgiving without the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade? Here’s an Exodus song that’s the closest thing I could think of to the big parade in NYC today.

Exodus – Lunatic Parade – 1990 Impact In Imminent

The Danish band Daemon put out an album in 1996 with each song based off of one of the seven deadly sins. Their killer song for Gluttony certainly fits today’s theme!

Daemon – Gluttony – 1996 Seven Deadly Sins

DT is probably my favorite of the Gothenburg melo-death metal bands and this song’s title reminds me of having to sit through a stressful yet large meal with arguing relatives.

Dark Tranquillity – Feast Of Burden – 2000 Haven

Back before Arch Enemy gained fame for having a woman, Angela Gossow, singing with growling vocals, they put out three pretty kick ass albums. Pilgrim was later re-recorded with her on vocals but the original is by far the better version. You can also substitute this song with the Iron Maiden song of the same name.

Arch Enemy – Pilgrim – 1999 Burning Bridges

And of course you can’t have the pilgrims and not the Indians (HTTR btw!) So here’s the Anthrax classic Indians. You can also substitute an Iron Maiden song for this one if you want, namely Run To The Hills of course.

Anthrax – Indians – 1987 Among The Living

Most of us probably aren’t from the mountains of Romania, but that doesn’t mean that today we don’t have the kind of hunger that Darkthrone wrote about. Gotta love some classic 2nd wave black metal from Norway.

Darkthrone – Transilvanian Hunger – 1994 Transilvanian Hunger

So many Cannibal Corpse songs could fit today’s theme, but I settled on Carnivorous Swarm. Sorta makes you think of that rush to the table when the announcement has been made that the food is ready to be eaten.

Cannibal Corpse – Carnivorous Swarm – 2009 Evisceration Plague

After you’ve gorged yourself you can sit back, turn on some football and slip into a food coma listening to this Apocalyptica song.

Apocalyptica – Coma – 2000 Cult

Here’s the last song of today’s Thanksgiving playlist, and like the Election Day playlist I posted earlier this month it also ends with a Megadeth song. If you’re getting up early tomorrow for extra $avings then this song is definitely for you.

Megadeth – Good Mourning/Black Friday – 1986 Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving everyone! I really hope RG3 and the ‘Skins beat the Dallas Crygirls today. Oh and if you can think of any songs I should have put on this playlist, feel free to post them in the comment section below.
